Tainted gasoline ??????

Put gasoline in my car this afternoon as I was driving it, it started to sputter like it was out of gas then when i tried to start it later on this afternoon it would not start and smelled like when you turn off a kerosene heater I was wondering if I may have gotten tainted gas and if so how do I fix this problem
