Vonage, keep my existing number?

If I order vonage, and request to keep my existing number, when the transfer is complete, do I need to call my current service provide to cancel my phone service, or they will cancel it for me? or I have to pay for vonage and the landline. My phone provider is Cox. My number lies within the geographic area where numbers can be transferred to Vonage.
