Are alligators dangerous?

My roommate went to University of Florida, and their mascot is an alligator. So yesterday when he saw a little one by the side of the road he put it in his knapsack and brought it home. He says he can teach it to do tricks and he feeds it hamburger. Is this alligator going to grow up and act like a dog, or will it start biting people?
