Is athletics a professional sport in any area?

If you mean athletics as in the sport governed by the IAAF, I know many athletes receive endorsements, and I think there is prize money given out. So at least at the Olympic/post collegiate level it's pretty much professional world-wide. But there are many people who just run (or any other relevant discipline) for fun, not money.
